'I didn't go into politics for money but to help my country' — Kufuor unhappy with strong desire for wealth in politics

Ex-President John Agyekum Kufuor has bemoaned the strong desire by politicians to enrich themselves.

The quest to see one's society’s progress through free-will, sacrifice and devotion is what he said compelled him into politics.

However, speaking during an interview on TV3’s New Day show on Thursday, July 14, monitored by Modernghana News, affirmed that politicians these days only talk and dream about riches and power at all costs without thinking about society's progress.

“I didn’t go into politics to make money. I just believed there was some mission for me to pursue to better a lot of our society.

“Monetization of politics these days, people talk so much money these days, they make it seem people go into politics to make money,” he laments.

Aside from his call for patriotism in politics, the stateman further asserted that the NPP is a party that has a remarkable record of tackling hardships through social intervention programs.

Kufuor cited education, health sector and justice delivery as areas where the NPP government is always focusing to improve the standard of living for Ghanaians.

“Generally, there is this belief and commitment that the party is a party of destiny, destined to be the party to help evolve the nation of Ghana to serious wealth-creating society, of deep social sense inclusively.

“It showed when we got the chance, in terms of doing the necessary social interventions like education, like healthcare, fairness and justice, like the repeal of the criminal libel law to allow people to think and to talk and also to demand accountability of leadership at the same time to also dwell in the people that sense of responsibility of citizenship,” he said.

The ex-President added, “So it is there within the party, It is like because of the current challenges, we occasionally seem to be losing our way but when you talk to the rank and file in many respects, they are set to regain the trajectory as I said earlier.”
