Samari writes on the culture of silence and intolerance

The level of intolerance to criticisms and dissenting opinions *on the part of* this government led by *Nana-Bawumia* is unprecedentedly high. In fact, never have we seen such a level of intolerance in our body politics. Not even in the era of military rule.

As if the closure of radio stations, arrest, and molestation of journalists for no crime, the suspension of Captain Smart from ABN for being critical of this government are not enough, yesterday, the Hon. Dr. Clement Abas Apaak wrote an article taking on the president's claim on his fight of corruption on CNN which got published by Ghanaweb and was subsequently replaced with the news item,

"Covid-19 remains a threat to national security – Interior Minister"

In his usual point-blank and academic nature, the outspoken lawmaker rubbished the president's claim and chronicled report after report that shows that since 2017 when this party took over power, the country's corruption ranking has been poorer and poorer.

Without mincing words, the uncompromising lawmaker stressed on how the current government did not have an interest in the corruption fight from the onset. To sum it all, he referred to the former special prosecutor labeling the president as "a mother serpent of corruption".

Unsurprisingly, as the story aggravated and the heat already on government, it was pulled down from the online news portal at the behest of the intolerant Nana-Bawumia and their apologists. This is not new after all. If crocodiles eat their own eggs, what will they not do to the flesh of a frog?

Did the president think he could just peddle such blatant falsehood without being scrutinised? He thinks no Ghanaian should be given the platform to criticise him for his failed performance in government.

In fact, Sir Sam Jonah is right. There is a certain attempt to enforce a culture of silence through repression, intimidation and undue interference in the work of key institutions. But what do we expect from someone who in day light robbed the people off their will?

Akuffo Addo and his dictatorial allies should know that well-meaning people like the Hon. Apaak would not sit aloof and watch him spew blatant lies around. Ghanaians will resist oppressors' rule at all cost.

I remain a citizen not a spectator
