President Akufo-Addo has stated that his government’s flagship Free Senior High School (SHS) policy will become a permanent feature in the country’s educational set-up.

The president says government will continue to invest heavily in the policy to give every child an opportunity to acquire secondary education.

“The investments in Free SHS have been worthwhile, and we are going to continue with it. We are going to make it a permanent feature of our educational system to make it possible for every young person who wants to study and grow to be able to do so,” President Akufo-Addo mentioned.

The President was speaking at a meeting with students and parents of the best eight graduates of the 2020 West African Senior High School Examination (WASSCE) at the Jubilee House last Friday.

The eight students are among 411 Ghanaians who obtained 8As in the 2020 WASSCE, written by the first batch of Free SHS students.

The 411 students are part of the 465 students who scored 8As in the exams across the West African Examination Council (WAEC) member countries.

In addition, the 2020 Free SHS batch are said to be record-holders for being the only year group to have obtained a 50 percent pass rate [Grade A1-C6] in all the four core subjects – English Language, Mathematics, Integrated Science, and Social Studies.

“When I was told what the achievements in the WASSCE were, I was beside myself [with joy],” the President noted.
