The impact of the novel coronavirus, COVID-19 has been felt in all aspects of life. Across the world of business, education, finance and sports have felt the pressure of the pandemic as it ravages.
In Ghana, the situation is not different. Per the directives of the president, H. E. Nana Addo Danquah Akuffo Addo, all educational institutions have been closed down while teaching and learning is expected to be conducted online. Has the aim of this initiative been achieved?
The management of GB Assessment Ltd (GBAT), an educational consultancy firm that offers Standardized Summative Assessments and Test Preps for basic schools, as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has organised a virtual mock examination that began in April and is conducted every week Wednesday through to Friday for all BECE candidates. An initiative that is benefiting over one hundred thousand (100,000) students and eight thousand (8,000) basic schools nationwide.
Mr. Opoku Boateng, the Managing Consultant of the consortium in an interview with Latenu radio expressed utmost displeasure of the effect of the pandemic on educational activities hence the need to innovatively reduce or cushion it effect, thereby the consortium making educational services available and accessible to all at no cost.
“Out of the classroom does not mean out of studies”. All those schools, parents and students need to do is to subscribe to the service as it comes with no cost”, he added. This is a way of contributing to SDG 4 – Quality Education.
The virtual examination covers seven (7) core subjects; English Language, Mathematics, Integrated Science, Religious & Moral Education, Social Studies, Information Communication Technology, French and the two (2) electives subjects; Ghanaian languages (Asante Twi, Akuapem Twi, Fante, Ga, Ewe and Ga Dangme) and Basic Design and Technology (Home Economics, Pre-Technical Skills and Visual Arts).
Many beneficiary schools, students and parents have expressed their gratitude to the firm for its intervention in this abrupt moment in the educational sector.
