The purifying power of fire: Holi, Holika, and the science of Sanatan Kriya

The physical body is a manifestation of the five elements in their various combinations. These elements unite to form a body due to an impurity or dosha. In Ayurveda, the doshas are Vata, Pitta, and Kapha, while other Vedic traditions interpret them as selfish or negative thoughts.

The dosha, along with its inherent tendencies, shapes your prakriti, or basic nature. The level of impurity in the elements directly influences the quality of one’s thoughts: the purer the elements, the higher and subtler the thoughts; the more impure, the grosser and more negative the thoughts absorbed from the environment. Among the five elements, fire (Agni) holds a unique position—it cannot be polluted and naturally rises against the pull of gravity.

This characteristic gives fire the power to purify anything it touches and to elevate the consciousness of the individual. It is no coincidence that “Agni” is the first word of the Rig Veda. Certain times and energy patterns amplify the body’s purification process, and the festival of Holi is one such occasion.

On Holi, the legend of Holika and Prahlad illustrates this principle. Holika entered the fire with her nephew Prahlad. As a sadhika undergoing purification, the fire accepted her. Prahlad, already pure, remained unharmed. Symbolically, a pure body resists the fire—representing both physical flames and the negativities or disturbances of life.

A pure body is eligible to ascend to higher lokas, converse with divine beings, and experience ananda (bliss). Conversely, an impure body remains tied to transient physical pleasures, unaware that while it thinks it is enjoying life, time is passing it, leading toward rog (disease or suffering). Life, like creation itself, is bipolar—a sum of opposites, with bhog (enjoyment) and rog always in tension.

Sanatan Kriya details specific fire purification techniques for Holi. Practitioners create a circle of fire around themselves, and through sacred mantras given by the guru, purification is instantly triggered, leaving the body and mind lighter. Meanwhile, regular practice of Ashtang Yoga cultivates the inner purity of Prahlad.

During the auspicious mahurat of Holi, Guruji will guide participants on the significance of Holi and its mantras on March 2 at 5:30 p.m., followed by Vedic Yagya and Mantra Practices at Dhyan Ashram and its centers worldwide.
