American R&B singer Chris Brown has escaped immediate imprisonment after being handed an eight-month suspended sentence for assaulting music producer Abraham Diaw with a tequila bottle at a London nightclub in 2023.
The 37-year-old received the sentence at Southwark Crown Court on Monday, October 26, after pleading guilty to affray over the incident at Tape nightclub in Mayfair.
The jail term has been suspended for 12 months, meaning the singer will not serve time in prison unless he breaches the conditions attached to the sentence.
During the proceedings, the court heard that Brown struck Diaw twice on the head with a glass bottle. Diaw sustained injuries to his head and knee and was taken to hospital for treatment.
Brown’s friend and vocal coach, Omololu Akinlolu, who was also involved in the incident, received a four-month suspended sentence. Both men were additionally ordered to pay £1,500 in costs.
Judge Tony Baumgartner described the use of a glass bottle during the attack as dangerous, warning that it had the potential to cause more serious injuries.
Brown and Akinlolu initially faced more serious charges, including attempting to cause grievous bodily harm. However, the charges were dropped after both men pleaded guilty to affray in July.
The singer was arrested in May 2025 and subsequently granted bail after providing £5 million in security, allowing him to continue his tour.
Brown, who rose to fame with hit songs including Run It! and Forever, has previously faced legal consequences for assault. In 2009, he was convicted of assaulting his then-girlfriend, Rihanna.
