Nigerian Afrobeats singer Mr Eazi has reportedly revealed that he once turned down an opportunity to join English football club Chelsea FC because he believed his future was music rather than football.
According to the statement attributed to the singer, Chelsea approached him when he was at the same football academy as former Nigerian international John Obi Mikel, who went on to enjoy a successful career in professional football.
Mr Eazi allegedly explained that while Mikel was passionate about pursuing football, he had recognised his own potential in music and decided to allow his friend to focus on his sporting ambitions.
“Chelsea Football Club approached me to sign before Mikel Obi when we were at the same academy, but I turned them down because I knew I could do music, while my friend Mikel only wanted to play football. So I allowed him to shine,” the statement attributed to him reads.
Mikel established himself as a prominent midfielder during his time at Chelsea, winning several major trophies, including the UEFA Champions League in 2012. Mr Eazi, on the other hand, has built an international music career, becoming one of the notable figures associated with the global rise of Afrobeats.
