Entertainment pundit Nana Frimpong Zigah has called on the Ghana Music Rights Organisation (GHAMRO) to expand its royalty collection system to cover churches, drinking bars, commercial buses and other establishments that use copyrighted music.

His comments come amid renewed discussions about royalty payments in Ghana’s music industry, following concerns about low compliance among radio and television stations.

According to a report by musician D-Black, only 16 out of more than 700 radio and television stations pay royalties to GHAMRO.

Nana Frimpong Zigah believes extending royalty collection to other sectors could help the organisation generate more revenue and improve payments to musicians and other copyright holders.

The proposal also draws attention to the use of music in churches and commercial establishments. In September 2026, GHAMRO Chief Executive Officer Jackson Brefo reiterated that churches are not automatically exempt from royalty payments for the use of copyrighted music during services.

GHAMRO is responsible for licensing music users, collecting royalties and distributing payments to eligible rights holders.
