Ghana, US Virgin Islands agree on recruitment of Ghanaian teachers, nurses

Ghana and the United States Virgin Islands (USVI) have reached an agreement to facilitate the recruitment and deployment of Ghanaian teachers and nurses to the Caribbean territory to fill critical vacancies in its education and healthcare sectors.

A formal Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to finalise the arrangement is expected to be signed in Ghana in November 2026 by the Minister of Labour, Employment, and Job Creation.

The agreement follows a meeting between a Ghanaian delegation representing the Ministry of Labour, Employment, and Job Creation and the Office of the President, and senior officials of the US Virgin Islands government in St Thomas on Saturday, October 17, 2026.

The meeting focused on deepening bilateral cooperation between Ghana and the US Virgin Islands, particularly in the areas of healthcare and education.

The Ghanaian delegation was led by Presidential Aide at the Office of the Chief of Staff, Gilbert Attipoe. Other members were Technical Coordinator Kwabena Bediako Acheampong and Administrator and Executive Aide to the Minister of Labour, Employment, and Job Creation, Samuel Kodom.

The discussions centred on the creation of a structured bilateral recruitment framework that would enable qualified Ghanaian nurses and teachers to take up positions in the US Virgin Islands.

The initiative forms part of efforts by US Virgin Islands Governor Albert Bryan Jr. to strengthen critical public services, while providing Ghanaian professionals with opportunities to work internationally.

During the meeting, US Virgin Islands Commissioner of Labour, Dr Gary Molloy, announced that the MOU would be signed in Ghana in November to formalise the agreement.

The partnership is expected to provide a structured avenue for Ghanaian professionals to contribute their skills to the healthcare and education needs of the US Virgin Islands.

It also forms part of Ghana's broader efforts to strengthen strategic international partnerships and create opportunities for skilled Ghanaian workers abroad.

The planned agreement is expected to translate the diplomatic relationship between the two sides into practical opportunities for Ghanaian professionals while helping the US Virgin Islands address staffing needs in key sectors.
