Kofi Ajorlolo says his ban in Ghana movie industry opened doors in Nigeria

A ban intended to keep actor Kofi Ajorlolo away from Ghanaian film productions instead opened the door to more opportunities across the West African movie industry, the veteran actor has disclosed.

Ajorlolo said he was subjected to a two-year prohibition by a group of Ghanaian producers, making him the first person, in his account, to face such a sanction within the industry.

But rather than bringing his acting career to a standstill, the restriction coincided with increased interest from producers in Nigeria.

The actor explained that as Ghanaian producers attempted to shut him out of local productions, their Nigerian counterparts were reaching out to him with work opportunities.

He said the development demonstrated that the ban could not prevent him from earning roles because filmmakers outside Ghana were willing to work with him.

The pressure eventually appeared to have undermined the purpose of the punishment, according to Ajorlolo. He said the producers who imposed the ban later reversed their decision instead of allowing it to run for the full two years.

The actor estimated that the restriction remained in place for only about six to eight months.

“After six months or eight months or so, they themselves just pulled that thing out that I should come back,” he said.

Ajorlolo described the period as a difficult chapter in his career but also acknowledged the unexpected benefit it brought. The experience, he said, gave him greater exposure to opportunities within the broader West African film market, particularly in Nigeria.
