Ghanaian urban gospel musician Perez Musik has opened up about the dramatic experience that marked his transition from secular music to a life dedicated to Christian ministry.

The musician, who was previously known as “Tinny” during his days in Ghana’s secular music scene, said a series of spiritual warnings preceded the destruction of his recording studio in a fire.

Speaking on The Career Trail on Joy Learning TV and Joy News, Perez Musik explained that he had repeatedly received messages urging him to abandon secular music and embrace what he believed was his calling to serve God.

According to him, however, he was initially reluctant to change course because he was enjoying his life in the music industry.

At the time, his studio had become a place where several artistes recorded their music, including rapper Article Wan and other musicians from his community.

Perez Musik said matters took a more serious turn after he received payment for working as the sound person on Anita Erskine’s Fashion 101 project.

He decided to use part of the money to upgrade his studio with new recording equipment.

It was while he was preparing to purchase the equipment, he recalled, that he experienced another warning that made him question the decision.

He said he had an impression that the equipment could eventually be destroyed by fire, but despite the warning, he proceeded with the purchase.

Days later, tragedy struck.
Perez Musik recalled returning home on December 24 to discover that his recording studio had caught fire, destroying the equipment and bringing his plans for the facility to an abrupt end.

Although the incident was painful, he said it forced him to reconsider his priorities and the direction of his life.

Rather than viewing the loss solely as a disaster, the musician said he interpreted it as a wake-up call that pushed him to take his faith more seriously.

He said the experience changed his understanding of material possessions and convinced him that there was a greater purpose beyond the things he was accumulating.

The incident subsequently prompted Perez Musik to become more involved in church activities, prayer and Bible study.

He said his mother had always been deeply religious and had encouraged him to take his relationship with God seriously, but he eventually realised that he had to make that decision for himself.

As part of his transformation, Perez Musik said he also stopped drinking and smoking and began paying greater attention to his spiritual development.

He credited several people, including a woman he identified as Mama Winifred, for helping him navigate his new journey and encouraging him to remain patient and committed to his faith.

Interestingly, Perez Musik said he had experienced what he considered prophetic abilities even during his secular music days.

He recalled telling friends about events that later happened, despite being involved at the time in a lifestyle that he felt was inconsistent with the responsibilities associated with his spiritual gift.

For him, the problem was not recognising the gift but accepting the discipline and responsibility he believed came with it.

“I knew the gift was there,” he explained, noting that he was initially unwilling to change his lifestyle to meet what he understood to be the demands of his calling.

His eventual decision to embrace Christianity also influenced his music.

Perez Musik began producing urban gospel music, with his debut album, Tenacity, becoming an important milestone in the new phase of his career.

Since then, he has continued releasing music that combines contemporary urban sounds with Christian themes.

The transformation also resulted in a new stage name.

Moving away from the identity “Tinny”, he adopted the name Perez, inspired by the biblical account of Tamar and Judah in the Book of Genesis.

He explained that Perez represented breakthrough and symbolised his own belief that he had moved away from his former life and into a new chapter.

For Perez Musik, therefore, the journey from secular rap to urban gospel was not simply a career decision.

He sees the experience surrounding the studio fire, his spiritual struggles and subsequent transformation as events that helped redirect his life towards what he now considers his true purpose.
