A release warrant has been signed for former Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) Chief Executive Officer, Sedina Christine Tamakloe-Attionu, following the Attorney-General’s withdrawal of a motion seeking to prevent her release.
The Attorney-General on Wednesday morning withdrew the application for a stay of execution of the Court of Appeal’s decision to acquit and discharge Mrs Tamakloe-Attionu.
Following the withdrawal, the court proceeded to sign the release warrant, paving the way for her release from custody.
A three-member panel of the Court of Appeal in July 2026 quashed Mrs Tamakloe-Attionu’s conviction and 10-year prison sentence on 78 corruption-related charges.
The panel, presided over by Justice Emmanuel Ankamah, with Justices Samuel Obeng-Diawuo and Emmanuel Senyo Amedahe concurring, held that the trial judge had repeatedly shifted the burden of proof onto the appellant, contrary to the constitutional presumption of innocence.
The court also found that the prosecution had failed to establish several of the charges beyond reasonable doubt.
Hours after the judgment, the Office of the Attorney-General and Ministry of Justice filed a notice of appeal at the Supreme Court, stating that it was dissatisfied with the Court of Appeal’s decision to acquit and discharge Mrs Tamakloe-Attionu.
The Attorney-General subsequently filed a motion for a stay of execution at the Court of Appeal, seeking to suspend the effect of the acquittal and discharge pending the determination of the appeal by the Supreme Court.
However, Principal State Attorney Hilda Craig withdrew the application for a stay of execution on Wednesday morning.
The prosecution has instead filed the stay application at the Supreme Court, where the substantive appeal is pending.
The Court of Appeal subsequently struck out the application as withdrawn, clearing the way for the release warrant to be signed.
