Jamaican reggae artiste Fantan Mojah has died at the age of 49, just weeks before his 50th birthday.
The singer passed away on Tuesday evening at the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI) in Kingston, Jamaica, reportedly following complications linked to a heart condition.
His booking agent and close associate, Vertex, confirmed the death to Observer Online, explaining that Fantan Mojah’s health had deteriorated in the days leading up to his passing.
“Since he came back from the United States, he was hearty, but over the past week he started to ‘tek down’ and he was admitted to the UHWI,” he said.
Vertex added that the artiste’s condition worsened shortly before his death.
“Last night, he was vomiting blood, and that was it. He passed away,” he stated.
At the time of his death, Fantan Mojah was preparing for a performance at this year’s Reggae Jam Festival in Germany, with reports indicating that his Schengen visa had already been approved for the event.
The reggae musician had experienced health challenges in recent years. In July 2024, he was hospitalised in Martinique after suffering breathing difficulties and chest discomfort, with concerns raised at the time about his heart health.
However, by early 2025, Fantan Mojah had recovered significantly and resumed international performances, including tours in Europe.
Born Owen Moncrieffe, Fantan Mojah was known for his conscious reggae music and songs that addressed social issues, spirituality and personal struggles. He gained international recognition as one of Jamaica’s prominent roots reggae voices.
