Ghanaian content creator Kwadwo Sheldon is taking a swipe at the government’s ‘Nkokɔ Nkitinkiti’ backyard poultry initiative after reports emerged that some beneficiaries have begun eating the very chickens they received because they cannot afford feed.

According to Sheldon, many recipients simply lack the funds to buy poultry feed, forcing them to consume the birds instead of rearing them for long‑term income.

Reacting on X, he wrote: “Dem say the beneficiaries of the 'Nkokɔ Nkitinkiti' policy start dey eat the chicken cos dem no get money to buy feeds for the nkokↃ (sic).”

His post has triggered fresh concerns about the sustainability of the programme and whether adequate support systems were provided to help beneficiaries maintain the project.

Social media users also weighed in:

  • Suleiman: “24‑hour economy but the chicken can’t even eat for 24 hours.”
  • Wiseworld: “Feed prices are currently doing high jump, what did they expect? The chickens had to make the ultimate sacrifice.”
  • Manta: “The water carry my nkokↃ nkitinkiti all go.”

The ‘NkokↃ Nkitinkiti’ programme was launched to reduce Ghana’s heavy reliance on imported poultry. It distributed 3 to 7 million day‑old chicks to households and backyards, providing 50 chicks per beneficiary along with initial feed and technical support.

The long‑term goal was for citizens to rear the birds, produce eggs, and generate sustainable income — but rising feed costs appear to be undermining the initiative.
