Ghanaian rap icon Edem has released his new single “Volta VI” featuring Enam — a record built to serve as the defining anthem of Ewe pride, identity, and heritage. Released on May 1st, the song is Edem’s most culturally intentional work to date: a declaration designed to give the Ewe people, and the next generation especially, a reason to stand tall and own where they come from.

The name carries weight. Volta VI is conceived to be synonymous with excellence, determination, and the relentless drive to achieve — a title that doubles as a standard. At its heart, the song is a call to the Ewe community to show up, and to show up well, whenever they are called.

The world has responded in kind. “Volta VI” entered the Shazam Global Top 100 at Number 38 on release day, recording the highest number of Shazams in a single day for any new entry at that chart position — a global signal of the song’s immediate resonance.

To give the record its full generational dimension, Edem brought in rising talent Enam for a featured verse.

“I brought Enam into the studio for a verse and we thought Volta VI was the perfect song for her to be on.” — Edem

The music video has proven just as conversation-worthy as the song itself, fast approaching 400,000 views on YouTube and performing strongly on Audiomack. Featuring its subjects dressed in sharp suits and holding cigars, the visuals have sparked debate among fans who felt the imagery did not reflect traditional Ewe culture. Edem was deliberate in his response.

“For the video, we had to take time because I wanted to get it right — especially with correcting the stereotype. The problem we solved with the video was to show elegance of the Ewe people in a different light. People wanted us to wear traditional cloth like a typical Ewe man, but that is over played out.” — Edem

Every individual in the video plays themselves — no costumes, no characters, no performance of someone else’s idea of Ewe identity. The visual presents its subjects as they choose to be seen: powerful, polished, and entirely on their own terms. The talkability it has generated is itself a measure of how effectively it challenges long-held stereotypes.
