AY Poyoo laments low royalties in Ghana’s music industry

Ghanaian musician Ay Poyoo has voiced his frustration over the state of the music industry in Ghana, particularly highlighting concerns about the low royalties paid to artistes.

Speaking on the issue, Ay Poyoo expressed discomfort with how the local system operates, stating that musicians in Ghana are not adequately rewarded for their work even after years of dedication to their craft.

According to him, there is a clear difference between the music industry in Ghana and what pertains in foreign countries. He explained that artistes abroad can release just one successful song and earn substantial income through well-structured royalty systems.

“In other countries, you can do just one song and make a lot of money from it,” he noted, emphasizing how efficient and rewarding those systems are for creatives.

In contrast, he lamented that in Ghana, musicians often receive very little in return for their efforts. He cited an example, stating that an artiste could spend years in the industry and still receive as little as GHC200 in royalties, describing the situation as discouraging.
