Rev. Dr. Chris Hesse, renowned cinematographer and Director of Photography for His Majesty’s Sergeant, has underscored the importance of producing quality films that endure across generations. He delivered this message during a special screening of the film on March 13, 2026, at the National Theatre in Accra.
The event—organized by the Ghana Culture Forum and Flamboyant Damsel Ltd as part of the Ghana Culture Week Celebrations—brought together filmmakers, cultural advocates, and cinema enthusiasts to celebrate Ghana’s film heritage.
Dr. Hesse reflected on the challenges encountered during the production of His Majesty’s Sergeant, stressing that excellence must remain the guiding principle for Ghanaian filmmakers. The film, written and directed by Ato Kwamina Yanney (Snr), is a compelling wartime drama exploring themes of racism, survival, and the heroic contributions of Ghanaian soldiers during World War II.
Following the screening, a panel discussion examined the film’s historical significance and the future of Ghana’s film industry.
Also present was the film’s lead actor, Tommy Ebow Ansah (Tumi Ansa), who portrayed Sergeant Jafa Ibrahim.
Dr. Hesse, celebrated for his extensive contributions to Ghanaian cinema, has worked on iconic films such as I Told You So, Heritage Africa, Love Brewed in the African Pot, and The Boy Kumasenu. He also served as the personal cinematographer to Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and subsequent heads of state up to the second term of President Jerry John Rawlings.
The event also featured a screening of Tumi, an animation film by Jesse Sunkwa Mills.
Support for the programme came from the Ghana Culture Forum, Ghana Tourism Authority, Ghana Film and Television Arts, Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, IPMC, and the National Film Authority.
