Tyrone Iras Marhguy, a Rastafarian student at Achimota School who gained notoriety years ago for opposing discrimination against his dreadlocks, has shared an insightful post in response to news that a young girl was made to cut her hair after being accepted to Yaa Asantewaa Girls Senior High School.
Tyrone humorously and sarcastically shared his reaction in his post, exposing the false presumptions that associate maintaining one's natural hair with poor academic performance or lack of self-control.
“There is a beautiful caution from the house I live in, which says that keeping your hair can and will impair your learning, force you against authorities, and influence you into hard drugs till you fail. I kept my hair, and obviously, it’s failed me miserably! I remember scoring all Fs on my final exam. Now I'm homeless,” he wrote.
His remarks seem to make fun of the long-held notion in certain Ghanaian institutions that natural hairstyles, such as dreadlocks, have a detrimental impact on behavior or academic achievement.
Since then, Tyrone has received a lot of appreciation on social media for challenging antiquated beliefs about hair and discipline in the educational system.
Within Ghana's educational institutions, the incident at Yaa Asantewaa Girls SHS has reignited conversations about respect for cultural identity, inclusivity, and student rights.
