Renowned Ghanaian dancehall artiste Stonebwoy has defended the impact of dancehall music on Ghana’s economy, highlighting its significant contributions to various industries.
Speaking in an interview on Hitz FM, the multiple award-winning musician dismissed criticisms suggesting that dancehall negatively affects the country’s music industry. Instead, he argued that the genre is a major economic driver.
“Dancehall has put money in the pockets of hotels and airlines that bring foreigners to the country.
“It pays people to work during that week and creates numerous job opportunities,” Stonebwoy stated, referencing the economic activities surrounding dancehall festivals and events.
He emphasized that dancehall music supports countless livelihoods, indirectly boosting tourism and creatingopportunities for event organizers, vendors, and service providers.
Stonebwoy also addressed critics advocating for a singular genre to represent Ghana's music globally.
He argued that this approach is limiting and unrealistic, asserting that musical diversity is vital for growth and recognition.
“I don’t believe in the idea of pushing one genre to represent Ghanaian music. Even if I used to, I don’t anymore. We need everyone,” he said.
The dancehall star pointed to the United States as a prime example of a nation thriving on musical diversity, with genres like hip-hop, pop, and jazz coexisting and flourishing.
Stonebwoy encouraged Ghanaian artists to explore and excel in various genres, including afrobeats, dancehall, and hip-hop, to showcase the country’s rich cultural heritage.
“A country blessed with a rich cultural heritage should be allowed to express it in diverse ways,” he expressed.
