Nigerian music sensation Yemi Alade will fulfill a long-held dream when she takes to the stage at the opening ceremony of the Africa Cup of Nations.
The opening ceremony coming off today, Saturday, January 13, will launch the 33rd edition of the prestigious continental tournament, which kicks off with hosts Cote d'Ivoire facing Sierra Leone at the 60,000-seater Stade Olympique Alassane Ouattara in Abidjan.
The ‘Johnny’ will perform among hundreds of patrons to the official AFCON 2023 theme song 'Akwaba', meaning welcome in local Baoule language, alongside legendary Ivorian group Magic System and Egyptian star Mohamed Ramadan.
In a post via X on Friday, January 12, the celebrated Afrobeats singer expressed her excitement and gratitude at realizing a vision she had held since 2016.
"Since 2016, I have envisioned performing at the stadium for football ceremonies surrounded by hundreds of dancers and people.
“Seven years later, I'm performing at AFCON. It is indeed an honour and a dream come true. It's just the beginning," Yemi Alade said.
The aftermath of the much-anticipated opening ceremony will mark the start of a month of African football passion across Cote d'Ivoire.
