Seven dead, four trapped after galamsey pit collapses at Asaman Tamfoe

Seven illegal miners have died following the collapse of a mining pit at Asaman Tamfoe in the Atewa East District of the Eastern Region.

Four other miners are feared trapped underground as rescue teams intensify efforts to locate and retrieve them following the incident on Saturday, August 29, 2026.

The pit reportedly collapsed at about 11:00 p.m. while the miners were working underground in search of gold.

According to sources, two miners who were outside the pit when it caved in rushed into the community to raise the alarm and seek assistance.

Residents subsequently mobilised to begin a search and rescue operation and alerted the Police and other emergency agencies.

Rescuers worked throughout the night and successfully retrieved the bodies of seven of the 11 miners believed to have been trapped beneath the rubble.

Five of the deceased have reportedly been identified as residents of Moseaso, while the remaining two are said to be from the Asaman Tamfoe community.

Personnel from the Anyinam District Police Command, the Ghana National Ambulance Service, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and community volunteers are currently at the scene.

The rescue operation remains ongoing as the teams work to locate the four miners still believed to be trapped underground.
