N/R: Two arrested over murder of Yidani Chief and son

Northern Regional Police Command has arrested two suspects in connection with the murder of the newly enskinned Chief of Yidani, Naa Ntimla Nwenisim, and his son, Ntimla Bilaga.

The suspects have been identified as 25-year-old Majejiba Magne and 34-year-old Haruna Nlegle. Their arrest followed intelligence gathered by the Police regarding the August 14, 2026 attack.

The chief and his son were reportedly killed at about 3:00 a.m. when three unidentified armed men attacked their residence.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the attackers entered the compound and demanded to be taken to the chief's room. After their demand was refused, they allegedly fired a shot into the roof of a nearby room before forcing their way into the chief's room and shooting the two victims.

Five empty BB cartridges were recovered from the scene.

A post-mortem examination conducted at the Tamale Teaching Hospital on August 17 established that both victims sustained multiple injuries consistent with shotgun wounds and died from severe injuries and haemorrhagic shock.

Following the killings, the Inspector-General of Police deployed a special operations team from Police Headquarters to assist with investigations, while security patrols were intensified in Yidani and surrounding communities.

The Police said a breakthrough came on August 26 after receiving credible intelligence that two persons suspected of involvement in the murders were travelling from Dombine in the Gushegu District towards Chereponi.

The Gushegu Police Command subsequently alerted the Chereponi Police, who intercepted and arrested the suspects.

The two men were later transferred to the Yendi Divisional Command and have since been remanded in Police custody to assist with investigations.

The Northern Regional Police Command said investigations remain ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the murders and identify and arrest other persons who may have been involved in the attack.

The Command has appealed to residents of Yidani, Dombine, Gushegu, Chereponi and neighbouring communities to provide credible information that could assist the investigation.

It assured the public that information provided to the Police would be treated with confidentiality.

The Police also urged the bereaved family, youth and residents to remain calm and avoid reprisals or acts of vigilantism, stressing that anyone found culpable would face the law.
