General News AU Day: Freddy Meiway Pushes For African Unity, Open Borders
MAY 26, 2018 LISTEN

Legendary Ivorian musician Freddy Meiway is calling for a greater effort by African leaders to unite the continent.

He believes that unity is the only sure way that continent can develop.

Speaking in an interview with JoyNews’ Komla Adom as the continent makes AU Day on May 25, the ‘100 Zoblazo’ hit singer urged African leaders to take a cue from Europe and the US.

“It time now to [come] together…and to show the right way…,” he said.

Asked if his dream for Africa has been realized, Freddy Meiway was swift to say, not yet and that, it will only be realized when the continent unites.

“To be unified because” Europe has done it already “and the first power country is the USA...we have to be unified, we have to open the borders,” he said.

The veteran musician observed that it is very worrying that people who speak similar languages - like the Nzemas - have been separated by borders.

“I speak Nzema…in the West area after Takoradi they speak Nzema but you have a border…why?” he quizzed.

When it comes to entertainment, Freddy Meiway noted that African leaders have done little to forester unity and growth across the continent.

“Now the people have to do it, don’t wait for them [politicians]. I don’t wait for politicians…they talk but [no] action,” he concluded.
