The University Students Association of Ghana (USAG) has described as unfortunate Image a statement made by female Hiplife artiste; Mzbel that students of the country's universities are “a bunch of uncivilized and useless people” during a programme on an Accra based radio station. “Despite the fact that she was mishandled by a group of students by one of the country's universities, that does not warrant the kind of statement she made, describing university students as a bunch of uncivilized and useless people,” the students said. A statement issued in Tamale and signed by the president of USAG, Samuel Kwadwo Frimpong, the association considered the statement by Mzbel as an affront to the integrity of all university students in the country. “We therefore call on her to retract her words and render an apology to the entire university students in the country. We want to make it clear that university students are intellectuals and honorable people, hence we demand that she accords us respect and dignity,” Mr Frimpong said the USAG supports public calls for her to change her style of dressing because they consider it indecent and highly provocative.
The USAG had earlier on condemned the perpetrators of the assault on the musician when it happened at the KNUST campus and commended the swift manner in which the Students Representative Council (SRC) of the university responded to the issue. Meanwhile Mzbel has told Graphic Showbiz that she was not going to apologize to anyone. “I won't apologize to anyone. I didn't say all university students. I said some of them were uncivilized and useless. Some of them are useless because they do not know why they are in school. Yes I said on PeaceFM and I stand by my words. If I get the chance I will say it again. Why are they asking me to apologize when they haven't apologized to me for the way I was treated? Even the organizer of the show at which I was assaulted has not apologized to me. Well I said some of them because of what happened. I will never apologize to anyone,” she said. According to her university students are supposed to be matured. “I believe university students are mature people, but if some of them can misbehave and treat others like they way they did to me then I don't think I am wrong to describe them as such,” she said.
