“Sinking Sands” RECEIVES NINE AFRICA MOVIE ACADEMY AWARDS NOMINATIONS

-“Sinking Sands” Up for Best Film and Best Director-

(LOS ANGELES, Mar. 2, 2011) – “Sinking Sands” received nine Africa Movie Academy Award (AMAA) nominations, to include Best Film and Best Director.

The film, produced by Turning Point Pictures, LLC, is a feature-length, psychological drama that tells the story of a couple, in a loving marriage that turns into one of violence and abuse when Jimah becomes disfigured in a domestic accident. The project is intended to create awareness on the continuous existence of abuse among today's households. It is an effort to show a side of defense that is proactive.

“I am humbled and appreciative of the AMAA nominations,” said Leila Djansi, director of “Sinking Sands. “ I could not be happier for the cast and crew, as we worked to bring an entertaining, but conscience film for everyone to enjoy.”

Coming off of a British Academy of Film and Television 2011 Pan African Film Festival Choice Prize, Leila was recognized by the Africa Academy in 2010 when her film “I Sing of A Well” led nominations with 11 and taking home three of the coveted statues, AMAA Achievement in Sound, AMAA Achievement in Costume Design and Special Jury Prize.

For 2011, other nominations include, Hollywood actor Jimmy Jean-Louis for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his role as Jimah, newcomer Ghanaian-born, British actress Ama K. Abebrese for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her role as Pabi, with Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Make-up, and Best Achievement in Sound rounding out the nods.

A gracious Ama K. said, “What a pleasant surprise! I am overjoyed to be nominated and am so thankful to be recognized for my first leading role. It is really a good feeling and a blessing. I have to thank Leila for writing a great script, telling an international story, and allowing me to be apart of a great cast. It is so humbling.”

The AMAA's, the Oscars-equivalent for the continent of Africa, will take place March 27, at the Gloryland Cultural Centre, in Yenagoa, Bayelsa in Nigeria.
