Accra, 9 May, GNA - The Ghana Chamber of Mines on Monday presented a cheque for 250,000 cedis to Miss Sophia Tuffour, a Junior Secondary School (JSS) Form Two Student of Bishop Bowers School, for winning the maiden Chamber of Mines Quiz Competition for Junior and Senior Secondary Schools.
The quiz competition is part of the Chamber's programme to educate school children on the importance of mining in Ghana and the functions of the Chamber of Mines.
Presenting the cheque, Ms Joyce Aryee, Chief Executive of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, said mining contributed a lot to the development of the nation.
"It is right to let our future leaders know more about this activity and its economic benefits to our nation," she said Ms Aryee advised school children to develop the habit of reading to improve their knowledge and command of the English language. The Competition, which was open to students from Junior and Secondary Schools on mining activities and the benefits of mining to the communities, was run in the Educational Supplement every Friday in the Ghanaian Times for the past two months.
Miss Tuffour urged her colleagues to develop the habit of reading not only storybooks but newspapers as well in order to be abreast with current events and improve on their knowledge.
