YOUNG KEYBOARDIST has been thrilling live music fans in and around Accra with magnetic performances that recall the skills of Ghanaian high life musicians in the 1960s and 70s.

Ayim, who began his music career as a member of a church band, joined the Vision Band, a resident group of the National Theatre of Ghana, in 1999 where he had the privilege of being trained by Prof. Komla Amoaku, a renowned musicologist and co-director of the Institute for Music and Development, and Redd Cap, an acclaimed Ghanaian keyboardist.

During his stint with Vision Band, Ayim had the opportunity to share the stage with several local and international musicians including Ebo Taylor, Gyedu Blay Ambolley, Papa Yankson, Amandzeba Nat Brew, Prof. Komla Amoaku, Prof. Nathan Davies, Jimmy Dludlu, Manu Dibango and Salif Keita, among others.

“It was a great privilege to have been trained by Prof. Amoaku and Redd Capp, who are highly experienced musicians.

They helped polish my skills and introduced me to new ideas”, says Ayim, who is currently working on an album.

He recently participated in studio recordings with some musicians and groups including Daughters of Glorious Jesus, Eddie Ntreh and Faizal Helwani.

Ayim has performed solo piano pieces for a number of visiting heads of state such as the Sultan of Brunei, Queen Elizabeth II and the former US President, Bill Clinton.

In 2007 Ayim formed a quartet known as Adeshie, which regularly entertained guests and visitors to the Alisa Hotel in Accra. The group also performed for live music fans at the W.E.B. Dubois Centre and the Accra International Conference Centre.

After a stint with a couple of groups in Accra and Koforidua, Ayim joined Hewale Sounds, an instrumental ensemble based at the W.E.B. Dubois Centre in Accra, in 2008.

He later embarked on a tour of West Africa with the group, which took them to Mali, Niger, Togo, Mauritania and Guinea.

Ayim, who intends to perfect his skills as a recording engineer, is currently in the studio with Hewale Sounds for the recording of their new album, which consists of influences from several African countries.
