Kidney transplantation is an operation that involves replacing a diseased or dysfunctional kidney with a healthy kidney inside your body. The transplanted healthy kidney takes over the function. The surgery is usually used to treat kidney failuresi.e. a condition in which kidneys function at only a fraction of normal capacity. Many transplanted kidneys are bought from donors who have died but some also come from a living family member. Waiting for a new kidney can be long.If you have a transplant, you must take drugs for the rest of your life, to prevent your body from rejecting the new kidney.

Different Kinds Of Kidney Transplants
There are 2 types of kidney transplants performed: First is the one that comes from living donors i.e. family members and second those that come from people who have died (non-living donors) who can be unrelated donors. Both types of kidney transplants have their ownadvantages and disadvantages.

First Step Towards Kidney Transplant – Call From The Hospital

After receiving the call from the hospital’s transplant team indicating they have a kidney for you, the patient requires to go to the hospital as early and safelyas possible. Patient needs to take suggested list of things with him to the hospital include current medications, drug allergies information, health insurance details and appropriate clothing for several days. It’s also necessary for a patient to stop eating and drinking soon after they get notice that a kidney is available as the patient is required to be empty stomach at the time of surgery.

The Kidney Transplant Surgery
Once admitted, the patient is required to undergo blood tests, complete physical examination, a chest X-ray, EKG and other relevant tests. The patient will be given a general anesthesia to remain asleep for the duration of the surgery. As soon as the patient falls asleep, the surgeon will make an incision on the lower abdomen slightly above the groin.

The kidney transplant procedure majorly includes3 stages:

  • An incision or a cut is made in the lower abdomen of the patient through which the donated kidney is put inside in place of the old kidney. Usually the old kidney is left in place, unless it is affectingthe body causing pain or infection.
  • Once the new kidney is placed inside the body the nearby blood vessels are attached to the blood vessels of the new kidney so that the new kidney gets ample blood supply and it functions properly.
  • Lastly, the ureter i.e. the tube which carries urine from the kidneys to the bladderof the new donated kidney is attached to your bladder.

Although the procedure may sound relatively easy, but it's very challenging and complex surgery that usually takes around 3-4 hours to complete.

Post-Surgery Recovery
After the surgery, initiallyyou may feel some pain at the incision area. Doctor shall advise appropriate painkillers for few days to reduce pain if any.

Post operation, you'll immediately start your treatment with medication prescribed to prevent your body’s system from rejecting the new kidney.Mostly the transplanted kidneys start working soon after the transplantation process if they come from a living donor, sometimes it may take few days or weeks for proper functioning.Doctors may advise some patients to leavethe hospital in about a week, but you'll need to ensure that you attend regular check-ups at the transplant center, in order to assess your kidney function and to carry appropriate tests to check how well your medications are working. After kidney surgery, you should be able to join work and perform normal activities within a few months, provided you take good care.

Rejection in Kidney Transplantation
The most important issue that may arises after a transplant is “rejection of the kidney”. The body's immune system protects against attack from foreign elements, such as bacteria, viruses etc. This defense mechanism may seenew transplanted tissue as "foreign element" and attack it by rejecting it.

You wouldbe required to take immune suppressant medicines daily to prevent the rejection of your new kidney. Anti-rejection medicines also have a number of possible side effects as the body's immune defenses are suppressed.
