A LEADING member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Francis Assuah, has urged the leadership of the party to seriously consider Alhaji M.N.D. Jawula as the running mate to Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
According to him, the party greatly stands to benefit if Alhaji Jawula is chosen to partner the flagbearer in the December general elections.
Speaking to DAILY GUIDE in Accra on Monday, Mr. Assuah, who was the party's parliamentary candidate for the Juaboso constituency between 1992 and 2004, said Alhaji Jawula is a tried and tested individual who could bring a lot of votes to better the party's chances in the elections.
“He is one person who, because of his background as a traditional ruler and an excellent civil servant, can easily sway the many floating voters to the course of the NPP.”
Mr Assuah said the credentials of Alhaji Jawula as a dedicated civil servant were solid whilst his commitment to the ideas and objectives of the Danquah-Busia Tradition was never in doubt.
He said Alhaji Jawula's political life started as far back as 1970 when he was elected NUGS President at the Cape Coast University.
He had also served as District Chief Executive for Walewale, Gambaga, Tamale and Yendi districts.
“Alhaji Jawula has distinguished himself creditably as a top civil servant, having served as Director of Administration at the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning for three years and as a Chief Director at the Railways, Ports and Harbour Ministry. He is currently the Chief Director at the Ministry of Health.”
According to Mr Assuah, as the traditional ruler in Kpembe in the Gonjaland, Alhaji Jawula would definitely win massive votes for the NPP in the Northern Region in the upcoming polls.
He maintained that because of his involvement in football, Alhaji Jawula's name is on the lips of football fans and since football is the most popular game in the country, he is most likely to win the sympathy of millions of soccer fans.
“Infact, football fans remember his role in Real Tamale United and his contribution in ensuring the historic victory of the Black Starlets in Equador 1995,” Mr. Assuah emphasized.
He insisted that whether people like it or not, ethnicity will feature prominently in the pattern of voting in the coming elections, a factor which weighs heavily in Alhaji Jawula's favour.
“Born at Cowlane in Accra to a Ga mother and a Hausa father, the choice of Alhaji Jawula, a devout Muslim, will surely attract votes from both tribes and especially from the Zongo communities, something which has caused the NPP in past elections,” Mr Assuah noted.
