Why is Ebola infecting people at 'unprecedented speed' in DR Congo and can it be stopped? | DW News

Health authorities are worried about the speed of the spread. More than 2,000 people have died so far in the current outbreak of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and the World Health Organization warns that number could go up fast because the Bundibugyo species of Ebola, for which there is no licensed vaccine, is spreading much faster than any previous outbreak of Ebola. Professor Aileen M. Marty, who helped the WHO contain the biggest-yet outbreak of Ebola in West Africa a decade ago, says the rapid spread and high mortality rate now have less to do with the virus itself and everything to do with the conditions on the ground in Congo.
