Sudan's army retakes key highway linking Khartoum and besieged el-Obeid

The Sudanese military says it has regained full control of a major highway linking Khartoum with el-Obeid, a city that has been under siege by the rival paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The capture of the Al-Sadirat highway will help the military move troops, weapons, fuel, and supplies, and hinder the RSF's push to seize el-Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan state. Half a million people are trapped in the city and have been coming under intense RSF drone attacks, with the United Nations warning of an impending humanitarian catastrophe. The highway, a major strategic route, will also ease economic pressure by allowing livestock and agricultural crops to reach markets in the capital, and will enable humanitarian groups to reach displaced families more safely. If the route is consolidated, the military could intensify fighting toward the Darfur region, where the RSF holds strongholds.

Al Jazeera's Almigdad Alruhaid reports from the Sudanese capital, Khartoum.
