The Black Stars of Ghana has emerged as winners of Group F after easing past the Djurtus of Guinea Bissau with an impressive 2-0 victory to conclude the preliminary stage of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.
Some end to end action in the first half at the Suez Stadium could not produce any goal with both sets of attackers wasting the few chances that came their way.
First, Guinea Star man Piqueti unleashed a thunderbolt from just outside Ghana’s 18-yard box which almost found its way into the back of the net. A finger-tip save from goalkeeper Richard Ofori was enough to parry it into the crossbar.
From there one the Black Stars upped their game and came close to scoring through Jordan Ayew. His low shot could however not enter the net as it hit the goal post.
With just 3 minutes to end the first half, young striker Kwabena Owusu could have given Ghana the lead but his connection to winger Samuel Owusu’s well-weighted cross went wayward.
Having resumed the second half, Jordan Ayew finally gave the Black Stars the lead with a beautiful strike into the top corner. The Swansea attacker went past his marker and calmly curled his effort past Jonas Mendes in post for the Djurtus.
Ghana went on to dominate and dictate play as they exhibited their supremacy over their opponent. After coming close to getting a second goal on several occasions, Thomas Partey arrived early in the 6-yard box and slotted home an important equalizer to give his side a two-goal cushion.
The victors held on to eventually emerge as deserved winners to pick up the 3 maximum points.
By virtue of the results, Ghana has finished top of Group F ahead of Cameroon despite having 5 points each.
The defending champions drew goalless with Benin at the Ismailia Stadium in the other group game which was played simultaneously.
