Head coach of the Black Queens, Bashiru Hayford says they must improve their game despite beating Algeria by a lone goal in the opening match of the 2018 African Women's Championship.

A 12th-minute goal by defender Gladys Amfobea was enough for hosts Ghana to pick all three points against Algeria in the opening game on Saturday at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The Algerians responded with a couple of attacks on their own but the Black Queens marshalled around Faustina Ampah was equal to the task.

The Queens missed a couple of chances to increase the scoreline.

However, the former AshantiGold FC trainer hailed the display of the Algerian but insisted they must improve in their upcoming games.

"It was a good game for us. We started well and mounted pressure and got an early goal in the 12th minute," he told the press.

"We tried very hard to get more goals, but my girls could not find the target and we squandered all the chances.

"We have the three points and though the fans might have been looking for more goals, I think we did what was expected of us, and that was to win.

"The Algerians played well and were resolute in defense especially after we scored and I will say kudos to them for a good game.

"We play our next game on Tuesday against Mali, so we will go back to the drawing board and correct our mistakes so that we will improve in that game," he added.

Ghana will play Mali in their next match on Tuesday.
