Kumasi, Oct 31, GNA - Prempeh Volleyball Team of the Ashanti Regional Sports Council beat the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) volleyball team 2-1 to emerge winners of a one day gala competition organized by the Ashanti Region Volleyball Association in Kumasi at the weekend.
Before winning the final encounter, Prempeh in the preliminaries beat the Veterans and Fourth Battalion of Infantry (4BN) teams by two straight sets each.
KNUST on the other hand reached the final by thrashing Abrepo Volleyball Club two straight, beat Abuakwa 2-1 and went ahead to whip Apatakese by two straight sets before meeting Prempeh at the finals. The Veterans came third when they also beat the 4BN team 2-1. It was an all-play-all in the ladies division with the Regional National Sports Council team coming first by beating all the participating teams by two straight sets with KNUST placing second when they beat Apatakese 2-1 to take the third position. Mr Peter Adusei-Mensah, Ashanti Regional Volleyball Coach and organizing secretary of the Regional Volleyball Association, commended the participants for their enthusiasm and the interest they put into the competition.
He said the gala was organized to promote volleyball development and to select players for the forthcoming national volleyball festival to be held in Tamale. Mr Adusei-Mensah urged the participating teams to get themselves in readiness for the regional league, which will soon take off.
