President John Dramani Mahama in a special ceremony in Cape Coast commissioned the ultra-modern 16,000 capacity Cape Coast stadium .
The President of Ghana was joined by the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Her Excellency Sun Baohong to cut the sod.
The $35 million project was financed by the Chinese government as a grant to the people of Ghana.
Construction of the stadium began in August 2013 till the final inspection of the facilities on Christmas eve last year (24 December,2015) by officials of both Ghana and China. Earlier in January 2016 after the installation of the flood lights, the Chinese construction company turned on the lights for a test run, which was later followed by the official handing over from the Chinese engineers to Ghanaian engineering firm, the Architectural Engineering Services Limited (AESL).
The multi sports facility boast of 21 fully furnished rooms that accommodates two individuals per room, two halls for table tennis and boxing respectively, with the latter loaded with equipment and gym equipment for the boxers. There are two outdoor basketball courts, one handball and one tennis court, an eight lane running tracks and a football pitch.
