There is good news for Ghana as the country is expected to increase its medal hall from the All Africa Games by three bronze medals in weightlifting. This follows new revelation from the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) that gold medallist in the 53kg category; Elizabeth Onuah from Nigeria tested positive for illegal substances.
This means that Ghana's Ruth Baffoe who was fourth in the category would instantly win three bronze medals that she lost out on from in September 2015.
The news has brought joy to the Ghana’s weightlifting family who are now eagerly awaiting official correspondence from the Africa Weightlifting Federation.
In an exclusive interview with Joy Sports, president of the Ghana Weightlifting Federation, Ben Nunoo Mensah spoke about the hard work Ruth Baffoe put in ahead of the games.
“I think it is only fair because Ruth worked so hard; she put in so much work in preparing for the All Africa Games and she deserves all the medals she will get. She will get a medal each for Snatch, Clean & Jerk and for total performance.”
Nigeria finished the All Africa Games in second place after Egypt with 47 gold, 55 silver and 42 bronze medals and this is set to reduce further following latest revelations of doping among Nigerian athletes at the tournament.
As many as eight Nigerian athletes have been banned this week by WADA for failing drug tests. According to the Africa News Agency, Chinazom Amadi and Samson Idiata; winners of the long jump (women and men’s event) are among the culprits.
Ghana won a total of 19 medals at the African Games in Brazzaville, Congo.
