League Report Today in history: Opoku Nti wins CAF Champions League for Kotoko
DEC 11, 2015 LISTEN

On 11 December, 1983, Kumasi Asante Kotoko edged Al Ahly by a goal to nil to become champions of the Africa Clubs Champions Cup.

Asante Kotoko who had lost the final to the Egyptian giants the previous year 4-1 on aggregate, stormed Cairo and settled for a goalless draw in 1983 and ended up avenging that defeat with a 1-0 win in Kumasi in the return leg to rule Africa.

The only goal that won Asante Kotoko their 2nd continental title was scored by Opoku Nti, after connecting home a pass from John Bannerman on the 21st minute.

Alhly before conceding the goal had earlier threatened the Kotoko goal area after a back pass from a defender couldn't find Joe Carr in post, but wrongly went to Mahmoud El Khatib, the danger man for the Nationale.

However, he was closed down by Carr and this brought a big sigh of relief to the home side.

Kotoko won their first Africa Clubs Champions Cup in 1970 and added that of 1983.

The player who started for Kotoko against Ahly in 1983 were: Joe Carr, Ernest Apau, Kwasi Appiah, Seth Ampadu, Addai Kyenkyenhene, Albert Asaase, John Bannerman, Papa Arko(Cap), Ebo Mends , Opoku Nti, Isaac Afranie
