Today in history: Opoku Nti wins CAF Champions League for Kotoko

On 11 December, 1983, Kumasi Asante Kotoko edged Al Ahly by a goal to nil to become champions of the Africa Clubs Champions Cup.

Asante Kotoko who had lost the final to the Egyptian giants the previous year 4-1 on aggregate, stormed Cairo and settled for a goalless draw in 1983 and ended up avenging that defeat with a 1-0 win in Kumasi in the return leg to rule Africa.

The only goal that won Asante Kotoko their 2nd continental title was scored by Opoku Nti, after connecting home a pass from John Bannerman on the 21st minute.

Alhly before conceding the goal had earlier threatened the Kotoko goal area after a back pass from a defender couldn't find Joe Carr in post, but wrongly went to Mahmoud El Khatib, the danger man for the Nationale.

However, he was closed down by Carr and this brought a big sigh of relief to the home side.

Kotoko won their first Africa Clubs Champions Cup in 1970 and added that of 1983.
