Today in history: Liberty Professionals mesmerize Hearts

Dansoman-based Liberty Professionals went on rampage on Saturday, 20 November, 2004 against a depleted Accra Hearts of Oak side to hand them a 3-0  defeat to end their poor run in the league.

Felix Baffoe scored a brace and a third from Odartey Lamptey to avenge their 3-0 drubbing suffered at the hands of the Phobians in their first round league match of the season at the the Accra Sports Stadium.

The Phobians devoid of their regular team struggled against the fleet footed Liberty boys in front of a sparse crowd.

However, it was Baffoe who took advantage of Liberty's early dominance upfront when he stroked home the opener having profited from a melee which resulted from poor marking by  Hassan Mohammed, Dan Oppong and Kwame Antwi in the eighth minute mark.

The "Scientific Soccer" lads then took charge of the game and pressed the Hearts defence with countless onslaughts that they somehow managed to waste to the chagrin of the crowd.

Coach Cecil Jones Attuquayefio made changes which saw Francis Jojo Bossman and Frank Kornu replacing Joseph Ababio and Alfred Nii Larbi almost worked as the combative Bossman brought energy and penetration to a sluggish Hearts attack.

But at a time Hearts seemed to have the upper hand, Baffoe took advantage of  incredible footwork from substitute Michael Helegbe who dazzled his way past his markers before sending an admirable cross for the former to consolidate their lead in the 65th minute.

Lamptey finished off the demolition exercise six minutes later from yet another Helegbe assist to finish off the Phobians.
