Medeama Celebrates Its 5th Birthday Today

Today marks exactly five years that Medeama Sporting Club was formed by respected Ghanaian business magnate Moses Armah.

The Mauves and Yellows are celebrating their 5 th anniversary and can boast of chalking a modest success during the period.

After only five years, the Tarkwa-based side has become an attractive football brand with top notch players  and seasoned administrators managing the affairs of the ambitious side.

Medeama have chalked decent successes with their latest fairly tale story being their imminent participation in the next year's CAF Confederation Cup after defeating Kotoko to win the country's MTN FA Cup crown last term.

With a comprehensive plan and financial injection coupled with professional executives, the club is ranked among the best four teams in the Ghanaian top-flight after only five years with their image towering  beyond expectations.

James Essilfie mooted the idea of forming Medeama Sporting Club

The idea to form the club was mooted by current Chief Executive James Essilfie with an unfettered approval from current Executive vice-president Albert Commey as well as long-standing member Mohammed Alhassan.

The name Medeama was chosen after a thorough deliberations with Mr Armah, his friends and colleagues who thought that the name of the club should reflect the local area it would serve.

As such the Nzema word Medeama, which means 'my brother or friend', was chosen to give birth to a dream of making friends through football.

Medeama took the Western Region of Ghana by storm since its formation and within two years of its debut on the football scene it qualified from the Third Division league and Second Division Leagues in the Western Region to the National Division One League.

In the 2009/2010 league season, the club managed to qualify to the Middle League playoffs but controversial refereeing decisions robbed the team of a place in the Ghana Premier League.

Following the decision by Mr. Kwabena Kesse to relinquish his 100% stake in the Ghana Premier League side Kessben FC, Mr. Armah entered the race to complete the takeover of the club.

On 29 th  July, 2010 a deal was reached for Mr. Armah to gain full control of Kessben FC.

The only glitch was that the club was named after the previous owner which made it impossible to resonate with the masses as it was seen as belonging to just Mr. Kwabena Kesse and not a community.

In line of his plans of making the club a community-based outfit, Mr. Armah applied to the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to have the named changed but the laws of the local federation meant that the change could not be effected until six months later.

The GFA finally approved the name change in January 2011 and Medeama Sporting Club was born.

Today, the biggest takeover in Ghanaian football history is yielding positive dividends with a growing reputation that continue to earn rave reviews in the West African country.

Moses Armah affectionately called 'Mospack' is gradually turning the club into a super-team in Ghana as they grow in leaps and bounds.

The steel tycoon has bankrolled mind-boggling spending spree over the past years with the view of not only winning the Ghana Premier League title but also becoming the most attractive club for local and foreign-based players.

The passion, drive and ambition of the affable owner and his able lieutenants threaten to turn football on its head in the West African country in the years ahead.

Many came into the picture with a view of making bold statements, but they flattered to deceive as the huge burden of running a club in a country with a low-middle income status crumbled right under their noses.

Top dog clubs like Kotoko and Hearts had dominated the local scene for more than two decades, but the emergence of the likes of Medeama has seen some of the  giants playing catch-ups.

Armah is on the threshold of transforming his Medeama side into blue-chip overnight with an eye for the Premier League crown still in sight despite missing out rather painfully last season.

Medeama has become an attractive brand where top players seek to ply their trade while promising players aspire to hone their talents –unlike in the past where it was largely Kotoko and Hearts who had the financial muscle to purchase top-notch players.

Moses Armah continues to spend thousands of dollars on his 'baby' in a move to make the club giants not only in Ghana but on the continent – an aim that could not be far from attaining.

Their qualification to represent Ghana at next year's CAF Confederations Cup competition  bears ample testimony of what patience, passion, dynamism, leadership and money can do to achieving intended goals.

An unknown club, situated in the mining town of Tarkwa has become one of  the major talking points in the country and touted among favourite to clinch this season's title.

Armah plans to take the club to dizzy heights and even put mighty Kotoko and Hearts in the shade by turning his new plaything into the most attractive football brand in the country.

The sponsorship package from two giants mining companies: Goldfields Ghana Limited, Tarkwa  and Ghana Manganese Company Limited have played influential roles in the rise and rise of the club and deserve huge commendation for living up to their social responsibility status.

With an effective structure which has ensured it smooth run in the last five years, the future looks bright for the Mauves and Yellows.
