Two former members of the Black Stars who featured in the 60’s and 70’s, Messrs Eric Oman Mensah and Alex Mingle, are reported dead.

Alex Mingle, 62, died in Accra on Wednesday, November 30, while Oman Mensah, 70, also passed on in Accra last Monday, December 5.

According to Rev. Kofi Pare, who broke the sad news of his former colleagues to the Graphic Sports, played important part in the hey-day of the Stars during their time.

Rev Pare’s views were corroborated by Nana Sam Brew-Butler, a former chairman of the GFA and currently a director of Cape Coast

Ebusua Dwarfs, the team that brought Mingle to national limelight.

According to him, Mingle who joined Dwarfs from a non-league side in Accra, was a student at the St Augustines College when he started playing for the national team.

Indeed, it was during his time at Dwarfs that the Black Stars’ defence was dominated by Ebusua players, namely Robert Mensah ( in goal), Asani, Emmanuel Sam, Wilson, with the late Mingle at right-half-back, Butler remembered.

Alex Mingle’s stint with the Stars spanned four years - from 1969 -73, Rev Pare said.

The burly defender later joined Accra Great Olympics from Dwarfs at the twilight of his career, and in latter years became the team manager of the now-defunct Zebi FC, owned and bankrolled by the late Boye Sowah, another national star.

For the late Oman Mensah, Rev Pare recalled that he played for Accra Great Olympics alongside his brother Attu Mensah and was a member of the 1965 Africa Cup winning Black Stars team in Tunisia.

He featured for the Stars from 1965-68.
Funeral arrangements in respect of the two departed national heroes will be announced later.
