GHANA SWIMMING FEDERATION ELECTS NEW PRESIDENT

The Ghana Swimming Federation has elected Theophilus Wilson Edzie as the new president of the Ghana Swimming Federation and eight (8) others Executives for a four (4) year team at a congress held at the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) Conference Hall, Ridge-Accra on Tuesday 11th October, 2011.

Federation Internationale De Natation (FINA), World Swimming governing body had earlier expressed concern over the existence of two (2) parallel swimming associations in Ghana; one recognized by FINA and the other recognized only in Ghana.

These however called for the two bodies to dialogue and bring a lasting solution that would respect the constitution of FINA and also aimed at saving the face of swimming development in Ghana.

The congress which saw Hon. Kojo Adu-Asare, past member of the Association elected as the 1stVice President was convened by Ibrahim Issah (then incumbent president and chairman of the congress). In all, 28 delegates including 4 women and 24 men, from the regions, swimming institutions and swimming clubs across the country participated in the democratic process.

Other executives elected are; Mrs. Marguerita Accad (Tesano Sports Club) as 2nd Vice President, Mrs. Helena Williams (University of Ghana) as Treasurer and Muniru Kassim of the Northern Region as the Secretary General.

The four (4) other executive members elected are Kweku Sam Brew from Eastern Region, Eric Kornor (Greater Accra), Richard Nii Ahene Koomson (Central Region) and Ibrahim Wallee representing Ashanti Region.

Hon. Kojo Adu- Asare polled 25 Votes against Michael N. Tamakloe (Westen Aquatic Club), 3 Votes to clinch the 1st Vice President position: All other nominees were duly elected by acclamation.

Chief Olatokunbo Thomas, FINA Bureau Member and Chairman of the FINA Legal Commission supervised the constitutional electoral process on behalf of the International Federation. He was of full bliss to observe a peaceful and democratic election and pledged FINA & CANA'S support for Ghana Swimming. Chief Thomas had earlier conferred on the Director General of the Sports Authority, Mr. Wolanyo Agra to discuss the way forward for swimming in Ghana

The newly executive Council of the federation was sworn into office by Chief Thomas as they bestowed on Mr. Ibrahim Issah, as the Honorary life President of the Federation.
