Ghana threw away a first half lead to suffer a 2-1 defeat to unfancied South Africa in their Group B opener of the African Nations Championship on Saturday at the Stade Wad Madani.
The local Black Stars opened the scoring in the 39th minute through midfielder Daniel Larbi Coomson whose header beat the South Africa goalkeeper.
The inexperienced South Africans rallied from behind to score two second half goals from Ellex Collen Zimba on the hour mark and an 84th minute through Leonard B Shangu.
Ghana were silver medalists at the last edition of the competition two years ago in Ivory Coast.
