Accra, Dec. 15, GNA – Ghana's Heavyweight amateur boxer, Awusone Yekini has joined Chinese boxing club, Yeland Beijing Boxing Club on a three-year deal to participate in the World Series Boxing (WSB).
The 2010 Commonwealth Games bronze medalists has since left for China after being drafted by the Yeland Boxing Club at the WSB International Boxer Draft held in London last June.
The WSB is the World's first league tournament for professional-style boxing and it is organized by the International Boxing Association (AIBA) and marks a new era in the sport aimed at strengthening the grassroots amateur foundation and also providing a bridge between amateur and Professional boxing.
A statement signed by Dominic Kankam, Acting General Secretary of the Ghana Amateur Boxing Federation (GABF) copied to GNA Sports in Accra said the deal brokered by GABF President, Ray Quarcoo will provide an investment return for the country with a clause mandating the boxer's release for international competitions.
It said other boxers such as Maxwell Amponsah and Ahmed Saraku have also secured similar deals with clubs in Kazakhstan and USA respectively.
