Scholarship For Basketball Talents

By the kind courtesy of Kwaku Amoako, a Ghanaian basketball trainer based in the United States of America, aspiring Ghanaian basketball players will be given the opportunity to exhibit their talents while gaining scholarships to study with some American universities.

Mr. Amoako, who has lived in the USA for well over 30 years, says he is here in Ghana to boost the popularity of the game while giving several opportunities to young Ghanaians, both at the Junior High School and the College level.

He told DAILY GUIDE SPORTS that “I know that there are talents here in Ghana, that is why I have come home to discover them, help develop the game and teach them how to play the game in the right away.”

According to him, his fact-finding mission to Ghana will culminate in some basketball clinics in May or June next year.  

“It will be a two-week clinic meant for elite players in Accra and high school students in Cape Coast.”

The goal, he said, is to get scholarships for talented players to school in the USA whereas others get the opportunity to play professional basketball all over the world.

“I am affiliated with basketball coaches and sports directors who are looking for talents.”

Meanwhile, a basketball tournament will be held tomorrow at the Lebanon House at Tudu, Accra, at 11am.

The tournament is part of moves to boost the game in the country.

According to Kwaku Amoako, prizes would be given to deserving teams. “I want to give the next generation kids the opportunity to travel to the USA and make it big in basketball and also have free access to education.

“It is my duty to leave a lasting legacy”, he added.

The teams will be divided into groups where they will battle for honors.

In his playing career, Mr Amoako played for five American schools from 1996 to 1998 at his base in San Diego, California.

He is currently the head coach of Coastal Elite Club Basketball team, a team he has coached since 2001. He is also the assistant coach, scout and recruiter for Miramar College at San Diego. By Charles Nixon Yeboah
