Young Ghanaian midfielder Jordan Ayew was part of the Marseille team that clinched the Ligue 1 title after a 3-1 win at home to Rennes on Wednesday.

The 18-year-old, despite being in the sidelines for the Rennes game, played a part in Marseille's season for the first time since 1992.

It was a historic win for Ayew as his father Abedi Pele was part of the team that won the club's last league title in 1992.

Jordan, who was then only one, was at the stadium when they won the title in 1992 but was a toddler and would not remember the father's lifting of the title.

But this season's title victory will remain deep in his memory as he adds to the Ayew family's impressive tradition with Marseille.

The Mediterranean outfit began the match under pressure after Auxerre's earlier defeat at Lyon put them in the driving seat knowing victory would secure the trophy.

They delivered in style when it mattered, with defender Gabriel Heinze giving them a lead and even when Jimmy Briand equalised, Didier Deschamps' side kept their cool to win with goals by captain Mamadou Niang and midfielder Lucho Gonzalez to spark joyous scenes of celebrations at the Stade Vélodrome.

Auxerre had paved the way for Marseille's title win by losing 2-1 at Lyon.
