The Chief Executive Officer of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), Dr. Paa Kwesi Baidoo, has been suspended for two weeks for allegedly breaching a directive issued by President John Dramani Mahama barring public hospitals from suspending emergency admissions.

A letter dated June 5, 2026 and addressed to the Chairman of the KATH Board directed that the CEO be suspended with immediate effect after he reportedly authorised the announcement of a suspension of emergency admissions at the hospital on Wednesday, June 3, 2026.

The directive stated that Dr. Baidoo admitted during a meeting with the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, and senior ministry officials on June 4, 2026 that his actions were contrary to clear instructions from the President. The meeting was attended by the Chief Director, Technical Advisor and Legal Advisor to the Minister.

“I am respectfully directing the Board to suspend the Chief Executive Officer for a period of two weeks with immediate effect for causing to be announced the suspension of admissions of emergency cases to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital,” the letter stated.

It added that the CEO would be required to report to the Minister of Health after the expiration of the suspension period.

The Ministry indicated that the action was taken in line with Section 36(1) of the Ghana Health Service and Teaching Hospitals Act, 1996 (Act 526).

The letter also instructed the KATH Board to investigate the circumstances under which the hospital’s Head of Public Affairs Unit granted media interviews announcing the suspension of emergency admissions. It further directed the Board to determine whether the communication was authorised by management and to apply appropriate sanctions where necessary.

The Board has been given two weeks to submit its report to the Ministry.

The suspension follows public backlash over reports that KATH had halted emergency admissions due to congestion, a situation that sparked widespread concern about healthcare delivery at one of Ghana’s major referral hospitals.
