Madam Hawa Yakubu may be dead and gone, but to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart and former Member of Parliament (MP) for Cape Coast, Ms Christine Churcher, her works are still alive.
During an interaction with the media on her vision for the NPP and Ghana during her campaign, Ms. Churcher, who is contesting for the position of National Women Organiser of the party paid glowing tribute to the 'iron lady', the late Hawa Yakubu for her role in galvanising support and votes of women for the NPP.
She promised to walk in her shoes to deliver the needed votes for the NPP to help win the 2012 general elections. The former legislator also paid glowing tributes to the late B.J Da Rocha who she identified as one of her mentors, including the late Naa Morkor Busia and Grace Coleman – all of blessed memory for the significant roles they played in the NPP.
If given the opportunity to become the National Women Organiser of the party, Ms Churcher said women would no longer be marginalized at any level of the party and promised to the let the dreams of the late Prime Minister, Dr Kofi Abrefa Busia to live on.
Ms Churcher said she was overwhelmed by the level of women support for the NPP as she went round the length and breadth of the country to canvass for votes. “I am even more convinced as I go round the country that with the right kind of leadership and resources, the potential s of our women can be unearthed for the greater benefit of the party and Ghana”, she emphasised.
Though she admitted that women have made significant contributions to the NPP over the years, she noted that their full potentials have been under utilised for the benefit of the party. Ms Christine Churcher assured followers of the party that the traditional role of women in the NPP will change at all levels of the party hierarchy, stressing that “I have come to the conclusion that the NPP can no longer take for granted the role of its women if it wants to re-capture power in 2012.”
She expressed confidence and optimism in the capabilities of the woman, saying “all they need is a strong advocate (like herself) who will give them a voice at the table where decisions are made in the party.”The former MP therefore promised to bring her organisational expertise to bear on women of different backgrounds across the country to bring victory in 2012.
