New Belenenses coach Toni has axed Ghana-born on-loan US international Freddy Adu from his squad in the Portuguese top-flight.
Adu is on-loan at Belenenses from Benfica, but Toni wants to reduce squad numbers and has decided the American is not required.
Record says Adu will now return to Benfica, though whether he stays with his parent club for the second-half of the season is still undecided.
Adu turned down the opportunity to play for the Black Stars before the 2006 World Cup.
