GTB UNVEILS PLANS FOR PARAGLIDING 2010

By dave

Ghana Tourist Board is feverishly preparing for next year's edition of the annual paragliding festival in Kwahu during the Easter festivities.

In a statement released in Accra, the Board indicated that the next package, the fifth in a series, will include other activities such as a marathon race and adventure hikes on the Odweanoma Mountain at Atibie.

The release said GTB has initiated contacts with the paragliding pilots most of whom are based outside to begin preparations for next year. Their leader, Walter Nezer, an internationally acclaimed glider who is based in South Africa has expressed interest in coming to Ghana next year. The release also said that a lot of corporate organizations have expressed the desire to support the next event in 2010 with Adom F/m emerging as the official radio station for the event.

Paragliding as an international tourism event was introduced in Ghana in 2004 to promote domestic tourism. It is organized to coincide with the Easter celebrations in Kwahu and has been hosted by the Kwahu South District Assembly since its inception in 2005.

There are two types of gliders or pilots who participate in the event; the solo pilots and the tandem pilots. The solo pilots fly alone without passengers whilst their tandem counterparts carry passengers in their flights. The latter are the ones preferred for Ghana's Paragliding festival given the number of passengers who want to fly.

The organizers have been the Ministry of Tourism, the Ghana Tourist Board, the Kwahu South and West District Assemblies.

The current infrastructural layout includes a permanent take-off point on the Mount Odweanoma Scarp from Atibie, a receptive facility, a parking lot and an entertainment area. The Nkawkaw Stadium is used as the landing point for pilots and passengers. The paragliding festival has been one of the biggest domestic tourism event attractions in Ghana since its inception in 2004.

Promotional opportunities are also available for organization and individuals who would want to be associated with the event, especially those who may want their logos displayed in the air.
